Detox Foot Pads

Detox foot pads are called by several different, but similar names. They are sometimes called detox foot pouch, detox foot pouches or detox foot patch. Sometimes people simply refer to them as foot detox. Whatever they are called, the pouch’s purpose is to help detoxify you from the ground up.

Several suppliers sell different pouches with a variety of ingredients. They make different claims. This article gives a general overview.

Different detox foot pads have a variety of ingredients. One common ingredient is wood vinegar. Crushed stones, powdered herbs, and other types of vinegar may also be included.

How to Use the Pouch

To use the detox foot pads, you should attach one or more pouches to your feet, using the pouch’s adhesive. Leave it on overnight or all day. Change pouches when they get wet and change color. Continue for a few days or weeks, using new pouches each night, until either you feel better or the pouch does not change color very much. Repeat the cycle whenever you want.

Claims and Counter-Claims

Suppliers make one, two or three basic claims about how their detox foot pads work:

  • Heat from the pouch, although this is often called “far infra-red” by the suppliers
  • Extracting toxins into the pouch
  • Reflexology or acupressure

The pouches are warmed by being in contact with your foot. The ingredients may help trap the heat; they might also stimulate your foot to warm up. Among other things, increased warmth usually increases the blood circulation, especially in the capillaries near the skin. Normally, your foot perspires anyway.

The warm pouch, and a tight seal against your skin, encourages this. Perspiration carries some toxins out of your body (along with salty water, as everyone already knows).

The pouch’s powdered ingredients will absorb the perspiration, including any toxins. Some suppliers point out that the pouch changes color, in proportion to the extracted toxins.

But here's the catch, when using the pouch, you will find the heat generated on the sole of your foot is much different from the heat of...say...sweating when you have on thick socks.

Some of the advertising materials show the sole’s pressure points. This implies that the pouch uses either reflexology or acupressure to stimulate the liver or kidneys, as well as other organs or systems in your body.

Let’s move on to the sceptics’ counter-claims. I have not noticed anyone saying “The pouch leaves me cold” – at least, not in the literal sense of disputing that their foot was warmer with the pouch. Nor have I noticed anyone saying “My feet did not perspire (more)”.

One counter-claim is “The pouch turns dark by sprinkling on pure, or salt, water”. You are invited to do this experiment for yourself, if you have a pouch handy. However, if you have used the pouch for foot detox, you may have found a difference in the texture and consistency of the fluid on the pouch.

When removed from the foot in the morning, the pouch will be "gunked up" with a viscous fluid or mucous type of moisture, much different from the appearance of a pouch simply wetted with salty water.

Settling the Claims?

I have not noticed any counter-claim that “I was harmed by using a detox foot pads”. Nor does it seem likely that you would be harmed – just don’t lose your balance when you get out of bed while wearing them!

Few people argue against sweating in a sauna, or a hot tub, or by exercising. You need to avoid dehydration, of course, in those circumstances. But most of us have felt “good” after those experiences.

Basic Detox-ology

Three steps are involved in almost any detoxification program:

1. You need to determine whether you need this detoxification program.

2. You should avoid future contact with the toxin(s).

3. You clean out the toxin(s).

Do I Need This Detoxification Program?

Several testimonials paint a “before” picture or lethargy, fatigue and just not feeling real well.

The detox foot pads is a generalized detoxification program. Some suppliers are careful not to make any specific claims, but simply point out that the process has been used for centuries (in China or India, for example) and that there are many satisfied users.
